What is The Underwire, and what’s so great about it?

Human-ing can be a tough gig, but some things make it a little easier and more enjoyable. My hope is that this newsletter might be one of those things for you, and that it might also support you in creating stuff that makes you happy and adds to the sum total of joy in the world.

In The Underwire, I share a mix of personal essays, reflections on the things that haunt me in the dead of night, and even the odd poem, which is weird because until recently I was fairly certain I hated poetry. Nowadays poems slide out of my brain and onto the page from time to time, and - gasp - I like it. Who knew.

Because I’m a nonfiction book publisher and longtime editor I happen to know some stuff about writing and publishing, so sometimes I share tips, prompts, and encouragement for the writerly road.

And because I’m also a longtime student of the antics of my own mind (through therapy, meditation, journaling, reading oodles of self-help books etc.), I’ve acquired a colorful bouquet of spiritual and mental health practices and tools that work for me more reliably than numbing out and distraction ever did. Sometimes I share those, too.

Who writes The Underwire?

My name is Maggie Langrick, and I am a queer, white, Gen-X, Canadian woman living in Los Angeles. My Bumble bio says it best: I’m a walking contradiction. Profound and profane, a healthy hedonist, seriously hilarious, hardworking lazybones. I love making friendly small talk with strangers, and having big, strange conversations with friends. I’m a happiness maximalist and recovering neurotic; a little bit witchy-woo and a big bit analytical. Although sometimes that ratio goes the other way.

Some stuff I do in work and life:

  • Founder, publisher and CEO at Wonderwell (www.wonderwell.press)

  • Host of the Selfish Gift podcast (www.selfishgiftpodcast.com)

  • Former child actor (my IMDB is under Margaret Langrick)

  • For fun I write, paint, hike, and lie on my back overthinking everything. I love to cook because I love to eat!

  • I speak on stages and podcasts about the intersection between writing, purpose, and personal growth
